A clear call to action above the fold

"Above the fold" means what someone sees before they scroll. Many people looking for a tradie are on a phone, often in a hurry. If they can't see how to call or book straight away, many tap back to Google and pick someone else. One clear button fixes a lot of this.

GUIDE

Who it's for: owners whose website looks fine but doesn't make the phone ring.
Time needed: 30 minutes to check and plan. Your web person can usually make the changes in an hour or two.
You'll need: your phone, your website and the login (or your web person's number).
Our view: pick one main action and make it impossible to miss. For most trades, that's a phone call.

Our CTA Guide

Step 2. Get your hours right

Choose the one thing you most want people to do:

  • call you (best for urgent or local work)

  • ask for a quote (best for bigger jobs)

  • book online (best if you have set time slots)

One main button beats three competing ones.

Step 3. Add 5 to 10 real photos

Swap vague words for plain ones.

Step 1. Check your main category

Open your website on your phone, not your computer. Don't scroll. Ask yourself:

  • Can I tell what this business does and where?

  • Can I see a phone number or a button?

  • Can I tap it?

Ask a friend to try too. Watch where their thumb goes.

Step 5. Add one line about what you do an where

Above the button, say it plainly: "Licensed electricians in Tauranga and the Mount. Same-week call-outs." No slogans people have to work out.

Step 4. Put a tap-to-call number at the top

Add your phone number to the header on every page. Ask your web person to make it a tap-to-call link, so it dials when tapped. Check it stays visible on a phone.

Watch out our

Google's guidelines (Guidelines for representing your business on Google) say:

  • use your real business name, with no extra keywords or suburbs added

  • if customers don't come to you, hide your address and set a service area instead

  • don't create a second profile for the same business

Breaking these can get your profile suspended. If you're not sure, check the guidelines before you change your name.

How to check it's working

Open Performance on your profile monthly and note calls, website clicks and direction requests. Help: Understand your Business Profile performance.

  • Ask new callers how they found you.

  • Set a monthly reminder to add photos and check your hours.

Next, keep the reviews coming with guide R1, How to ask for a Google review without sounding pushy.

Example: Angela's 20 minute tidy

Angela runs a small landscaping business. Her profile still showed a 2019 photo of an empty section and the wrong phone number. She spent one lunch break adding job photos, her services and holiday hours. A new customer said the photos were why she rang.

The rule: Right, Real, Recent

  1. Right: category, hours and phone number are correct today.

  2. Real: your own photos of your own work and team.

  3. Recent: something new every month, even just 2 or 3 photos.
