The secret to better video content isn't a better script

Video scripts - Buzz Marketing - digital marketing for SMEs

Don't memorise a script. Understand your message.

A video script shouldn't be something you memorise

I recently practised recording video content and discovered something interesting. When I read from a script, I sounded exactly like someone reading from a script: the delivery felt stiff, my gestures were limited and my personality disappeared.

Then I tried something different. I recorded while having a conversation with a colleague standing behind the camera.

The difference was immediate. I sounded more natural. My energy changed. My facial expressions became more animated. Instead of trying to remember words, I was focused on communicating ideas.

The problem isn't the script

A script helps you organise your thoughts. However you can run into problems when you become so focused on remembering every word that everything else suffers. Eye contact becomes forced. Gestures feel unnatural. Your delivery loses energy.

Most importantly, your audience can sense when you're reciting rather than communicating and the connection starts to disappear.

You might assume the solution is to throw the script away altogether. Actually, a script can be incredibly useful.

It helps you:

  • Stay on topic

  • Cover important points

  • Avoid rambling

Think like a conversation, not a performance

When I was talking to my colleague, I wasn't delivering a speech. I was having a conversation.

Most business owners are incredibly articulate when talking to a client, colleague or friend. But when they’re in front of a camera, they get anxious and feel the need to perform.

The best videos don’t feel like a performance, they feel like conversations.

What to do instead

Rather than memorising paragraphs, create a simple framework using key points instead of full sentences.

Ask yourself:

  • What's the main message?

  • What are two or three points I want to make?

  • What is the takeaway for the audience?

Know what you want to say, but give yourself the freedom to say it naturally.

Why authenticity matters more than perfection

Many business owners avoid video because they want to sound polished and professional. The reality is that people connect with authenticity far more than perfection.

A slightly imperfect video that feels genuine will often outperform a perfectly scripted video that feels rehearsed. People want to see the human behind the business. That’s what builds trust.

The best communicators know their subject

Think about the people you enjoy listening to. Most aren't reciting memorised scripts. They understand their topic so well that they can explain it naturally, adapting their wording depending on the audience and the conversation.

That's the goal. Not memorisation but understanding.

The biggest lesson I learned wasn't that I needed to spend more time learning a script. It was that the more I focused on the message instead of the wording, the better the video became.

Because video content isn't about delivering a perfect performance. It's about having a conversation with the people you want to reach.
